Guédelon, in Burgundy, south of Paris, is an ambitious project to build a medieval castle using only tools, materials, and techniques employed during the original era. The principal purpose of the project is to provide historians with insight as to how the castles were built. One of the stoneworkers explained the project to us and gave us a tour of the sight.
Afterwards, we traveled to Bourges, an old Roman town where homes are built right into the 2000 year old city walls. There is a cathedral built at the same time as Notre Dame, which is nearly as impressive, and the magnificent home of Jacques Coeur, who provided much of the financing for King Charles VII's fight to expel the English from France.
We spent the night at the Hotel Angleterre, so-named because the future King of Great Britain, Edward VII, once spent the night there.
