Amsterdam was only an hour from Brussels by high speed train, and was an utter delight. We had reserved a room at another Rick Steves recommended B & B, the Sunhead 1617, right on one of the principal canals. It was beautiful, the location was great, and the owners were fantastic. (One caution in Amsterdam, the cab drivers will take advantage of you at the train station unless you're careful. Get a fare commitment before you enter the cab.)
Amsterdam is like a really busy and crowded Bruges, with its old building and canals. There are an unending list of world class attractions and museums, wonderful restaurant choices, and a libertine spirit unlike anything we had seen before. We enjoyed Amsterdam quite a lot and wished that we had more time to explore it.
